Legal/Political Marijuana News

Logic Prevails After State Charges Man with Murder for Facilitating Pot Sale — Not Guilty!  Kyler Carricker, an innocent man, who was being railroaded because of Kansas’s immoral drug war, has beaten the system, and justice has prevailed.

Chris Christie Doubles Down on Ignorant Marijuana Statements — In a Chris Christie administration, there would be no such thing as legal marijuana use.  This isn’t the first time Christie has vowed to crack down on marijuana; in April, he told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt it was a “gateway drug.”

Anti-Marijuana Crusading US Attorney Melinda Haag

Anti-Marijuana Crusading US Attorney Melinda Haag

Anti-Marijuana Crusading US Attorney Melinda Haag Stepping Down — Controversial US Attorney Melinda Haag announced that she will step down on September 1, thereby bringing an end to one of the most aggressive campaigns against the medical cannabis industry since California voters legalized the drug in 1996. During her tenure, which began in 2011 when President Barack Obama appointed her to the western coastal district, she successfully shuttered more than six hundred medical cannabis dispensaries that were compliant with state law.

Why Marijuana Legalization is a Rare Issue That Divides GOP Candidates — The truth is that conservatives like states having independence when they like what the states are doing, and liberals feel the same way (the difference is that liberals don’t claim they have a philosophical commitment to states’ rights over federal rights in the abstract). When states’ rights collide with a policy objection, the policy objection is going to win.  Usually, that is. But there’s at least one area where the GOP is divided on the whole states’ rights issue.

John Oliver Has a Great Metaphor for Why Mandatory Minimums Should End — Mandatory-minimum sentencing laws are in HBO host John Oliver’s cross-hairs. On Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver went off on drug laws from the 1980s and early 1990s that have resulted in prisons overcrowded with inmates serving decades-long sentences for trafficking or selling fairly small amounts of drugs. Oliver pointed out that some criminals convicted of marijuana trafficking, including Weldon Angelos, were serving longer sentences than airplane hijackers, terrorists, and child molesters.

Medical/Health Marijuana News

Anti-Cannabis Academics Funded by Pharmaceutical Companies — Legalization opponents have turned to academic researchers in an effort to keep prohibition alive. If you’ve tuned into the news recently, you’ve probably heard academics make vague claims that marijuana is too dangerous, too risky, and too untested; that it’s unsafe for medicinal use. You may (or may not) be surprised to learn that many of those key researchers are actually paid by Big Pharma.

NIDA Director Says Cannabidiol (CBD) Is a Safe Drug — The director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Nora Volkow, believes that cannabidiol (CBD) – a nonpsychotropic cannabinoid – is “a safe drug with no addictive effects.” Volkow made the comments in an op-ed published by The Huffington Post.

International Marijuana News

Italy Takes Steps Toward Full Marijuana Legalization — Italy took its first official step toward full legalization of pot on Wednesday, leading Europe in what would be a groundbreaking change for the continent.  The Intergrupo Parlamentare Cannabis Legale, a cross-party committee of lawmakers, agreed on a provisional text to legalize the consumption, growing, production and sale of cannabis under certain conditions. The text was signed by 218 members of parliament.

Marijuana Insurance Coverage on the Horizon for Canadian Patients — Canadians who have been prescribed medical marijuana could one day see their insurance company footing the bill, experts predict, following the introduction of new Health Canada rules that allow for the sale of cannabis oils.
