Unless you are a member of the “choir” (my affectionate name for the hard core cannabis activists who live this movement day in and day out), chances are you’re going to miss a lot of cannabis news.  It’s not that there isn’t any, things are happening in the word of marijuana all the time.  But the mainstream media never seems to make it a priority to report on it.

So, since I follow these things, and am on every cannabis mailing list imaginable, I thought it might be a good idea to do a weekly round-up of the compelling stories that came across my desk the week before.  Sometimes I might discover stories older than a week old but still timely, so I’ll pass them on too.  If you have suggestions for stories to be considered for inclusion in next week’s round up, use the Contact Us form here and let me know.

Colorado Becomes 3rd State to Ask Feds to Reclassify Marijuana –– Colorado has become the third state to ask the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana in a way that allows doctors to prescribe it as a medical treatment.  The state asked the Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana from Schedule 1, a category that includes heroin, to Schedule 2. The change would allow doctors to prescribe pot and pharmacies to fill marijuana prescriptions.

College Students Nationwide Call for Marijuana as Safer Alternative to Alcohol —  Students at more than 80 colleges and universities across 34 states held rallies on their campuses this week to recognize April as National Alcohol Awareness Month. At first glance, these events don’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary. The message behind them, however, was anything but ordinary.  At the rallies, students called on their respective schools to “stop driving them to drink” and urged them to allow marijuana as a safer recreational alternative to alcohol.

Feds Subpoenaed San Francisco for Medical Marijuana Records — Files from the Department of Public Health, which permits the city’s two dozen — and dropping — cannabis dispensaries, were subpoenaed by United States Attorney for Northern California Melinda Haag and used to ensure the pot clubs were closed, city officials told the Medical Cannabis Task Force.

5 Things You May “Know” About Marijuana That Aren’t True — Writer Steve Elliott described when speaking to members of the general public, he’s often struck with the wide prevalence of beliefs about marijuana that have been scientifically disproven for years )I can so relate to this as well). How many of these myths have you trusted lately?  Elliott sets the record straight, backed up with scientific research, in this informative article you will want to share with all your friends and family.

Weed Wars’ Steve De Angelo Answers His Critics — Harborside’s Stephen De Angelo took a lot of heat from the medical marijuana community for a comment he hade during the season finale of Discovery Channel’s reality show Weed Wars.  In this article he answers his critics and explains why the comments were not everything they were portrayed to be.
